Projects 2013 - worldwide: Biodiversity and Cimate Change

This year’s focus was on the interrelation between Biodiversity and Climate Change. Examples were drawn from nine countries, on three continents. Species and ecosystems are under threat of extinction because of climate change and consequently, vital ecosystem services for Humankind are lost. At the same time the regulating role of intact ecosystems on climate change and the importance of their resilience are presented.

Featured projects in 2013

The United Nations declared May 22 International Day of Biological Diversity to increase public awareness on biodiversity issues and to disperse a greater understanding of the worth of Nature. This date was chosen to commemorate the signing of the Convention on Biological Diversity in 1992. More information on the International Biodiversity Day:  http://www.cbd.int/idb/.

Since 2001, The German Ministry for Economic Co-operation and Development (BMZ) , in cooperation with the Convention on Biological Diversity(CBD) Secretariat, has supported the organization of thematic and action days in Partner countries. Actions in 2010 and 2013 were also supported by The Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservancy and Nuclear Safety (BMU). The goal is to raise awareness and to promote the conservation of biodiversity on a local and global level.

The Events are organized in cooperation with GEO Magazine and with projects within the German International Cooperation, that are selected anew every year. On behalf of the German Federal Government, the “Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit” (GIZ) assists local partners in the implementation of projects and of action days.
